Division is the process of splitting a large number into equal groups. It is the inverse operation of multiplication. We use division to find out how many times one number is contained within another.
To master division, understand these four components:
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| Dividend | The total number you want to divide. |
| Divisor | The number you divide by. |
| Quotient | The result of the division. |
| Remainder | The amount left over after dividing. |
In word problems, look for keywords like 'distribute equally', 'share', or 'each' to identify that division is required. Always divide starting from the left-most digit of the dividend.
When dividing any number by 10, the last digit is always the Remainder, and the remaining part of the number is the Quotient. For example, 782 ÷ 10 gives a quotient of 78 and a remainder of 2.
Incorrect Remainder: Always remember that the Remainder must be smaller than the Divisor. If it is larger, your quotient is too small.
Division is essential for equal distribution. Always remember: Dividend = (Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder. Knowing tables up to 30 makes division much faster.
